The Children of Calais

On Wednesday 8 February 2017 the UK government ended its commitment to provide a safe haven for thousands of vulnerable lone child refugees in Europe, just six months after it was instigated. Campaigners had hoped 3000 children would benefit under the “Dubs” amendment to the Immigration Act. Only 350 will be brought to Britain.

The video above was my response to this, the most inhumane decision, our UK government has made since the refugee crisis began.

Less than two weeks into the new year, a month before the government closed down Dubs, I was back in Calais in Northern France to report on the children returning to the area, after feeling totally abandoned by the UK and French governments.

My report for Associated Press can be seen here.

By early January it was believed there were around 100 minors sleeping rough in Calais, with an estimated 2000 refugees not housed in official CAO centres.
