On 6 September 2017 the Catalan parliament approved a referendum calling for independence for Spain, a decision declared a breach of the Spanish Constitution by the government. 6000 additional national police and civil guard were deployed to the region, swelling state forces in Cataluña to 16,000. At 8am on 1 October 2017 the referendum polls opened.
